Bike Ride to Raise Funds for East Anglia Air Ambulance

East Anglia Air Ambulance (EAAA) is worthy of all our support. East Anglian Air Ambulance is a 365-day-a-year helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) covering Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. The charity receives no regular direct government funding and the £10.2 million in 2016 comes directly from charitable donations. None of us know when we may need their services, particularly in a vast county such as Norfolk so all fundraising on their behalf is much needed.

Hunstanton's Hughes Electrical shop staff are lined up to hit the road this summer aiming to raise over £5,000 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The initiators of the fundraising idea, Nigel Jeavons and David Young (based at the Hughes' Hunstanton and Wisbech stores respectively) plan to cover more than 500 miles in five days starting on 6 June 2016 and ending in King's Lynn around 1700 on 10 June 2016. The pair will be joined by Aaron Beck from King's Lynn and area manager Malcolm Tuff.

Nigel Jeavons said: "In 2015 we organised a football match which raised money for Marie Curie Cancer Care so were looking for a change this year and came up with the idea of a bike ride and then thought – how can we make it a bit different?"

Everyone involved are keen amateur cyclists but 30 to 40 miles is their usual limit. Each cyclist has had to undertake a significant training regime to build up their stamina in preparation for the challenge ahead.

Their journey will be covering five counties so the cyclists felt the East Anglian Air Ambulance would be a worthy charity to support.

Targetting £5,000 does not mean the cyclists want to stop at that. Indeed, they hope to raise more and are looking to businesses and individuals across the region to sponsor their journey no matter how large or small the sponsorship may be for this much valued emergency service which saves lives 365 days a year.

The cyclists are grateful for the support received to date and look forward to raising so much more with help and support from the public and local businesses.

The bike ride will be taking in the following Hughes stores in June:

  • Mon 6th – Spalding, Wisbech, Swaffham, Thetford, Bury, Newmarket, Ely
  • Tues 7th – Cambridge, Haverhill, Sudbury, Colchester, Clacton, Dovercourt
